A Whole New World: My Lasik Experience

Getting my Lasik surgery done was one of the best decisions I made in 2017. In my opinion, nothing has been as freeing as not being restricted to wearing glasses and/or contact lenses.

This video highlights my pre/post surgery experience, why I chose to do this procedure and expectations.

Whenever I reflect on this decision, the Disney Song, A Whole New World comes to mind especially the “Unbelievable sights, indescribable feeling, soaring, tumbling, freewheeling through an endless diamond sky……  A whole new world (don’t you dare close your eyes) A hundred thousand things to see (hold your breath it gets better) … I’m like a shooting star, I’ve come so far, I can’t go back to where I used to be.”

Can you tell I love that song??? Take a listen here and see why this song comes to mind. Enjoy!

Ps. Lasikplus is the name of the company I did my surgery at; click to schedule a consultation.

    1. No, it didn’t hurt me at all. I did however feel the pressure of the laser on my eye and there was a brief moment of darkness and my Dr. friend warned me of that before I went in. The specialist did as well as it was about to happen. Thanks for asking that though, I purposely chose not to mention it as I didn’t want to scare anyone 🙂 It cost me $1600.

  1. Wow, congrats on getting the surgery, didn’t even notice you don’t wear glasses anymore. My husband has been thinking about getting Lasik, hopefully he can get it done this year..thanks for sharing your experience

  2. My husband very much wants to do this and I think we will eventually get him in for an appointment. I don’t know if I’ll ever qualify to get it down as my eyes are still constantly changing. Hopefully though I’ll be able to one day.

  3. Wow, I am so glad your happy with your surgery and well done for being brave and going ahead with it! I often thought about laser surgery but I am too much of a wimp!

  4. I’ve been wanting to get Lasik done for quite some time now! Almost everyone I know who has had it has loved it. However, my mum got hers done in 2012 and had some problems (causes consistent dry eyes, her vision started getting bad again with a few years, etc.), so that’s why I’m, still a little bit reluctant.

    1. I am sorry your mom had that experience and I can equally understand your reluctance. First, I would get a consultation if I were you and explain the situation to the ophthalmologist and see what they say as you may not necessarily have the same experience as your mom. Good luck!

  5. What a brave decision to make, I know quite a few people who could be able to have lasik but I don’t think they want to or are worried about it. It must be incredible to have repaired vision, I alwys think vision is something we should never take for granted.

    1. Absolutely. Thanks for the compliment and I hope you continue to encourage the people you know so they can get it done too. Good luck!

  6. My husband has still this plans of undergoing into an operation like you did. But on the other hand he is very scared about it. I can’t say anything cause even myself is also afraid that he might loose his sight after the operation, I can’t stop thinking if the operation will go well or not, what if it turns out bad or what. Hopefully we will end up deciding this year.

    1. I can totally relate as my husband had the same fear of me losing functionality of my site in general. I practically had to plead with him after presenting to him the pros and cons of getting the surgery done (hahaha) as I realized his concerns came from a place of love. What I would suggest you do is to ask him how much he wants it. If he is like me and really wants it. YOU have to be strong, encouraging and supportive. Hold his hands and remain by his side from start to finish. If you can overcome your fear, your husband can easily get through this minor procedure. PS. you should also play him that Disney song, that’ll do the trick. Good luck to you both. xoxo

  7. That’s awesome to hear your great experience with lasik! I have considered this many times and I think my insurance increased their coverage!

    1. Not entirely sure I understand what you mean by your insurance increased their coverage. If you want it badly enough, you can save up for it if you have the means. Good luck!

  8. I’m definitely going to share your experience with my husband, he’s been talking about doing this for years, he absolutely hates wearing his glasses. It’s great to know that you feel so positive about the outcome!

  9. I want this so bad, but I have dry eyes so I’m not a candidate. 🙁 I decided recently that I love wearing cute glasses, but I hate that I absolutely have to wear them in order to function. It would be so nice to not have to worry about not being able to see!

    1. You just perfectly articulated one of the reasons why I got the surgery done. I am sorry you’re not a candidate but please rock ’em glasses 😉

  10. I keep thinking about getting lasik done – I’ve only had to have glasses/contacts for 9 years, so I definitely miss not having to worry about it all the time. I just can’t get passed the fact that you have to be awake for it! Keeps me stuck with my glasses and contacts.

    1. It isn’t really that scary. All you feel is the pressure of the laser on your eye and before you even realize what is going on, it is over! I hope you get over that fear and do it. 9 years is a long time but a lifetime is much longer. Good luck!

  11. I have went back and forth on whether I wanted to do Lasik. This is all such helpful info and helped me decide that I want to do it. I am in the perfect age range right now so as soon as I get over the fear of actually doing it I will make an appointment. Congrats on the surgery! Glad it enhanced your life

    1. I hope you do. The uber driver that drove me home after the surgery told me she wanted to do the surgery but missed out. Please if you know you are still in the idea age bracket, I wouldn’t hesitate if I were you. Good luck!

    1. Yes indeed, the cost of contacts and glasses adds up. So glad you brought that up as I didn’t mention it in the post. Thanks lady!

  16. I used to work with the doctor that invented this technique and i can attest to how brilliant it really is! I am glad “you’ve seen the light!”

    1. O wow… I am honored to know someone who knows the Dr. that invented the technique. Don’t always come across such people.

  18. I’ve been wanting to get Lasik because my vision is really bad and I have to deal with glasses all the time but I heard that it doesn’t last if its humidity. I live in a very humid place.

    1. I see. I did it last February and it is a year now and I have been in hot climate since doing it and never had an issue. Some complain about their eyes drying out but there are drops that I think could aid that…. I am not a Lasik expert but I don think that shouldn’t hinder you from doing the surgery of you want it. Good luck!

  19. I don’t wear glasses but I know so many people who have had Lasik done and they have loved the results! I’m glad that your surgery went well and that you are happy with your decision! P.S. I love that song and Aladdin is one of my fav Disney movies!

  21. I’m lucky that I have great vision and this isn’t something I’ll need but it’s great to hear you had a good experience!

  22. So jealous of your lasik!!! I really really wanted to get it and to SEE for once, but after a ton of tests, I ended up not being a candidate 🙁 Boo hoo! But so happy that you got it!

  23. My best friend’s mom got lasik a few years ago and swears it was the best thing she ever did. She loves not having to wear her glasses or contacts anymore! I have glasses myself, but my issue isn’t very bad, but if it were to worsen I would consider this an option.

  24. This is informative read for me. Knowing from your personal experience of lasik surgery and the insight knowledge behind this process is great to know.

  25. I have never thought Lasik but would love to get it done and I hope it giving me results. I have heard that something it is better to get it done earlier to get better results

  26. Wow! Congrats on being so brave and getting the surgery. It is quite pricey though and currently, I can’t afford it, but it is something I would like to do in future. I have glasses and Lasik will simplify my life in so many ways

  27. I have heard about Lasik and wondered if it was worth it. Your experience suggests that it is! (Also, I love that song too!!)

  28. I am so glad you are happy with your surgery and well done for being brave and going ahead with it. Great to have your detailed experience in the video.

  29. I don’t have bad vision and don’t really need to wear glasses unless I am doing note taking or something like that. I would definitely try Lasik if I had a vision problem.

  30. My mom had this surgery as well. I’m so glad it turned out to be such a positive experience for you. It was for her too.

  31. My husband had the surgery a few years ago and it was the best decision he ever made. I am glad it was for you too!

  32. I’ve been thinking about getting Lasik done for myself and my son. I can’t imagine life without contacts/glasses.

  33. It’s great to hear you had a great experience. One of my close friends had this procedure done too and she loves the results.

  34. I’ve gone back and forth a few times over the past few years about whether to get lasik or not. I honestly have fallen in love with my glasses at this point but I do this it’s amazing to even have this as an option.

  35. Oh, my! Now I’m scared after watching your video, in the future I want to have eyes surgery cause I suffer from nearsightedness, and it is getting worse, and I also do not like to wear glasses. Does it hurt?

  36. I am so pleased to hear you had a positive experience with your laser eye surgery. Something that I wanted my husband to try. but he has been skeptical about it.

  37. I have had friends who had the lasik experience. I know that it can be a whole new world once you have them. Very different than having to wear eye glasses. I have thought about having it done but am unsure given the severity of my astigmatism. Thanks for the great info here.

  38. Was just looking into this, but decided to stick with glasses. After all, I just got botox and fillers in my lips. That’s expensive too.

  39. My husband has been talking about lassie for the last two years. I’ve been terrified for him to do it until last year when any sister in law did it. She had a great experience with it!

  40. This is something my husband is considering. We’ve only talked about it twice but I think it’s something we need to come back to, I think he’d fair very with Lasik.

  41. I would love to have this done! My younger cousin did it years ago and I’ve wanted to ever since. My husband has had very poor vision since he was a child and has no interest in the surgery. He also is not supportive of me getting it because he thinks my vision is great in comparison to his. I just need to get him onboard with the plan!

  42. Ive worn glasses/ lenses for as long as I can remember. I am sure having Lasik done must be a liberating experience. I must muster the courage to do this.

  43. I have considered Lasik in the past. I just can’t bring myself to do it. I’ve had a few friends have the surgery, but after a year or more, their eyes have become more sensitive to light making it difficult to see at night while driving. Hope it all works out well for you.

  44. I’ve worn glasses since I was 11 so I’m really considering getting Lasik done. So happy to hear you had a good experience!
